Pressure Ulcers

A pressure ulcer is a localized area of skin injury caused by unrelieved pressure. Pressure ulcers usually develop on areas of skin over bony prominences, such as the elbows, spine, or heels, where pressure against the external support surfaces - such as a bed or wheelchair - tends to be highest. They are more common in patients with limited mobility, on bed rest or who use wheelchairs.

If you are confined to a bed or chair or if you are immobile, be sure that you or your caregiver inspects your skin daily for areas of redness or open sores, especially in bony areas.

If you have any questions, or your skin begins to breakdown, contact your physician immediately!
